Eucalyptus globulus is a giant eucalypt with long slender leaves about as long as your forearm. Southern Blue Gum has large cream flowers and gumnuts about the size of a 5 cent piece and flowers in the springtime.
Southern Blue Gum grows in frosty gullies where there is plenty of moisture in the Southern most parts of Victoria and in Tasmania. The tree locally around Beechworth and Stanley. It is easy to recognise for its handsome long leaves that are about one foot long and slender /skinny – May Gibbs type gum leaves with big gum nuts. Sadly most of the country where these trees grow was logged in the 1960’s and 1970’s (I remember my Dad being horrified in the early 70’s that more of these trees were being cut down) when the Pine Plantations were really expanded in the North East of Victoria – there are not many pockets of these trees left growing in stands large enough to gather honey from. Occasionally it is produced.
“Our aim is to educate people on the diversity of uses for honey and the fact 65% of Australia’s agricultural produce is pollinated by honeybees. This reveals just how important they truly are to our food security.”
