Built in 1856, the “Hive Apartment” by Beechworth Honey is situated in the former bank managers residence of the bank of New South Wales in the very centre of town. Designed by architects Robertson and Hale the former Bank of New South Wales is of architectural significance as one of the oldest bank buildings in Victoria and one of only a small number that remains from the 1850s.
A lovely light filled apartment, right in the very heart of town. You won’t find a location better than this for exploring the heart of Beechworth’s retail and historic complexes.
For Steven and Jodie Goldsworthy and their family, the building has special significance. Jodie’s great grandfather Benjamin Robinson was a gold miner in Beechworth and this building housed the gold buying office. Benjamin turned to producing liquid gold, honey, when he did not find solid gold. We think it’s fitting that whilst it must have been disappointing in the late 1800s to have passed the Gold Office without anything to deposit, Benjamin would be pleased to see the vocation he began, end up converting the building to house the historic collections of family and Australia’s beekeepers.
The Bee Garden & Courtyard
We think Benjamin would be particularly chuffed to see the bee themed “Hive Apartment” overlook the working beehive and courtyard garden. With all these connections there’s little wonder you feel the true essence of Beechworth and really appreciate the co-evolution of how the original gold rush evolved and transformed to not only shape a town and a region but also our iconic liquid gold brand.
The “Hive Apartment” is used to support Beechworth Honeys’ BeeCause movement. We provide complimentary hosting to collaborating visiting Australian and international beekeepers, bee scientists and academics. The “Hive Apartment” has also been used by bee related charities as part of fundraising activities and to help raise money and awareness for a range of like-minded causes. When it is not being used for these activities we love sharing it with couples and families and giving them the ultimate honeybee immersion experience in Beechworth.
