Soda Bread with Honey

Soda bread is traditionally a dense, savoury style bread that's delicious when lathered with honey! Create a delicious balance of flavours with a generous spread of butter and a drizzle of fruity honey. While honey is not traditionally an ingredient in soda bread itself, it makes a wonderful accompaniment.

  • 1 1/2 cup wholemeal flour
  • 2 cup plain flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • Butter (to serve)
  • Bee Fruity Coolibah Honey (to serve)


  • Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  • Mix the wholemeal flour, plain flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Form a well in the centre of the flour mixture and pour in the buttermilk. You may hear a slight fizz, which is the buttermilk reacting with the baking soda. This is what causes the bread to rise.
  • Gently combine the wet and dry ingredients little by little until a thick batter forms. Use your hands to incorporate the final bits of flour and gently shape into a dough. Do not overwork the dough.
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface and gently shape it into a round flat loaf.
  • Place the dough onto a lined baking tray. Score deep slices in a six-pointed star pattern into the top of the dough.
  • Bake at 200°C for 45 minutes until the bread is golden brown and crusty on the outside, or until the bottom of the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Transfer to a rack to cool. Serve with a generous lather of butter and a large drizzle of honey.
